Luke Mason 16' had an amazing weekend competing in the British Cadet and Junior championships in Nottingham.
Saturday was the cadet competition, he started well by winning 4 of his 5 pool matches, then winning all his direct elimination bouts to reach the final. This was a tense match with Luke down 3 points in the first minute, then a lot of doubles were scored, he got to the first break and had to change tactics.
The guy he was fencing didn't have to do much just stay out the way and wait for for Luke to panic and rush in trying to gain back the 3 points, which his opponent would either parry riposte or stop hit. It didn't matter to him if there were more doubles! But Luke was patient, he still had 2 more rounds and plenty of time. He kept the pressure on the other guy and only attacked when he was sure he'd score a single hit. This he did and levelled the score again, now his opponent started to get worried and made some big attacks that Luke countered and gained the lead. Luke comfortably adapted well under pressure and turned the tables winning 15 - 12.
Sunday he was up against the Juniors, he had a good start winning 4 out of 5 pools again then got through to the last 16, this he only lost by 1 point. The guy who beat him won the Junior's!
